On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Sudha Murty, founder and chairperson of non-profit charity Infosys Foundation, shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) about the tradition of the sacred band. She said that the tradition of tying a Rakhi is based on a true incident.

Philanthropist and Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty (PTI)

In her video, Sudha Murty explained that in the 16th century, when Rani Karnavati was in danger, she sent a thread to the Mughal emperor Humayun and asked him for help. Since then, the tradition of tying the sacred thread around the wrist of a brother has continued.

The billionaire philanthropist posted a video in which he said, “Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi, in my opinion, is one of the most important festivals where a sister ties a thread. It may not be a big festival but a simple thread that means you should always be there to help me in difficult times.”

“It goes back to Rani Karnavati when she was in danger. Her kingdom was small and was attacked by someone. She didn't know what to do, so she sent a letter to King Humayun, a Mughal emperor, saying that she was in danger and to please consider me as her sister and protect me.

“Humayun came from another country; he did not know about the thread. He asked the locals and came to know that it was a call from a sister to a brother. He said, okay, if that is the case, I will go and help Rani Karnavati. He left Delhi and went to her kingdom, but he came a little late as she was no longer alive,” added Sudha Murty, describing the history of the tradition.

Reacting to the video, an X user, Candid Shweta, commented, “Right now I know you don't know anything about Indian festivals and culture if you believe in this nonsense story. I am sorry for recommending your books for kids. You don't need to learn this made up story. Please read about Draupadi's Raksha Sutra for Srikrishna and the importance of Shravan Poornima.”

Another user, Anu Satheesh, commented, “I am really surprised that you as an author are saying such nonsense. Raksha Bandhan is associated with Krishna and Draupati. Please do some research.”

A third user, D Prasanth Nair, commented, “With all due respect madam, the origin of Raksha Bandhan goes back to the time of Mahabharata.”
