After heavy rains, the roof of Hyderabad airport is leaking

Hyderabad: Following a series of heavy rains, water entered a terminal at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad on Monday, August 19.

A video that has surfaced on social media shows passengers walking through the terminal as water drips from the roof onto the ground. The footage raises concerns about the resilience of the infrastructure in extreme weather conditions.

Heavy rains pelted Hyderabad at 1pm on Monday and lasted for at least 50 minutes. About 35.2 mm of this fell 17 mm of rain in 10 minutes, after which water entered the terminal at one point. The situation led to a discussion about infrastructure and the need for urgent repairs and better preparation for the future.

In response to videos of the incident that surfaced online, Hyderabad airport authorities admitted that there was a leak in the terminal building.

“We have immediately inspected the roof and there is absolutely no leakage/blockage/water accumulation/foreign object on the roof. Our team is working with the technical experts to ensure that this leakage into the terminal does not occur again,” the RGI Hyderabad Airport authorities said in a statement.

“The team is monitoring the weather conditions and is well equipped to deal with the challenges posed by the torrential rain. We apologize for any inconvenience caused in this regard,” it added.

In 2023, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad was named the best airport in India and South Asia at the Skytrax World Airport Awards.

The World Airport Awards, which have been presented since 1999, are the airport industry's most prestigious awards. The awards are based on customer votes in the largest annual global airport customer satisfaction survey.
