Eric Cantona storms off the SA set in a viral clip!

Eric Cantona shocked fans by storming off the set during a Showmax interview, only to reveal it was part of a high-impact stunt to promote the accessibility of the Premier League to anyone, anywhere.

Global (19 August 2024) – South Africans love the Premier League. It is more than just a game; it is a source of excitement, a topic of conversation and a shared experience that brings communities together.

By bringing the Premier League to our homes, Showmax has made it even more accessible to fans across the country.

To celebrate, the South African streaming platform recently kicked off the new Premier League season with a stunt that arguably became one of South Africa's most viral moments. Already a favorite among many football fans, Showmax pulled off an unforgettable surprise by bringing in the legendary Eric Cantona – a name that resonates deeply in the football community. Known for his fiery personality and unmatched skill, the former Manchester United captain commands attention both on and off the pitch. When Cantona appeared on Showmax's show Matchday Live, fans were glued to their screens, eager to hear what he had to say.

What happened next left the fans stunned.

The interview began as expected, with hosts Julia Stuart and Owen Hargreaves engaging Cantona in conversation. But things quickly took a turn when Cantona, visibly upset, began to respond to questions in a way that was far from typical. His answers were vague, his mood tense and viewers sensed something was wrong. The unease was palpable and fans could only watch as Cantona's frustration grew.

Then, in a moment that made everyone nervous, Cantona suddenly stood up, looked straight into the camera and declared: “We call it a beautiful game, but how many people in the world don't even own a television? To be truly beautiful, the game would have to be everywhere.”

As the tension reached its peak, Julia was heard asking, “What do I do now?” before the camera panned and revealed that the whole thing was a trap.

Cantona, no longer upset, explained that they were not actually in the studio and the real show would begin shortly.

But before he concluded, he left viewers with a strong message: “The Premier League is for everyone, everywhere, and it’s time for a revolution!”

Showmax echoed this sentiment and positioned itself as a driving force behind the idea of making the Premier League accessible to all.

You can watch the viral stunt below:

The stunt was a huge success. Across Africa, fans flocked to social media to express their shock, surprise and ultimately joy at the big reveal. The hashtags #EricCantona, #ShowmaxPL and #ForEveryoneEverywhere trended for hours, not only in South Africa but also in Kenya and beyond. The campaign generated a 72% increase in PR coverage and was worth over R35 million, with more than 27,000 mentions on social media.

Chief Marketing Officer Yatish Narsi summed up the essence of the stunt perfectly: “The reason for the stunt is Showmax's value proposition. To echo Cantona's sentiments: the revolution is here! The revolution is having the Premier League on your phone and at an affordable price.”

With Showmax's Premier League mobile subscription, fans can now enjoy the action wherever they are for just R69 a month (even less for Capitec Bank customers).

“The Premier League is in your pocket. Welcome to the revolution!” concluded Narsi.

What began as a seemingly awkward moment has ultimately turned into a celebration of accessibility and innovation. The revolution isn't just coming – it's here, changing the game for fans across the continent. The Premier League is now in your pocket and the beautiful game has never been more tangible.

Also, Eric Cantona is scary when he's angry (even if he's just pretending). Please don't make Eric angry again, join the revolution.
