Suspected drunk driver arrested after fatal crash south of Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) – A Las Vegas man was arrested early Saturday morning following a fatal car crash south of the Strip.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the accident occurred at 12:07 a.m. on South Las Vegas Boulevard at East Pyle Avenue, near the South Point Hotel.

An investigation revealed that a Nissan Rogue was traveling north on Las Vegas Boulevard while a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling south. According to police, the driver of the Jeep failed to pay attention to oncoming traffic and abruptly turned left in front of the Nissan.

The front of the Nissan collided with the right side of the Jeep, causing severe damage to both vehicles.

The driver of the Nissan was taken to UMC with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.

The driver of the Jeep, identified as 48-year-old Walter Quijano, was also taken to UMC with minor injuries. Police also found that Quijano showed signs of impairment and was arrested for DUI causing death.

“The death of the Nissan driver was the 93rd traffic-related fatality in the LVMPD jurisdiction in 2024,” the LVMPD said in a press release. “This collision remains under investigation by the LVMPD Collision Investigation Division.”
