Albany man accused of brutally beating woman and is to be charged with murder

ALBANY, Georgia (WALB) – An Albany man is facing charges in the murder of a woman he allegedly brutally attacked in early August.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley announced the new charges and the woman's death during the Albany Police Department (APD) media day.

According to a police report, 63-year-old Johnnie Jones attacked Melissa Law on Saturday, August 10, and left her for dead under a tree near a church in the 900 block of South Jefferson Street.

Law was on a ventilator for about a week before she succumbed to her injuries.

According to the victim's family, Law had an on-off relationship with her alleged attacker.

Authorities said Jones is also charged with aggravated assault, rape, stalking and murder. He is currently in the Dougherty County Jail.
