Roanoke man killed in three-vehicle crash in Tennessee

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – A Roanoke man was one of two people killed in a car crash on I-40 East in Tennessee on Saturday, August 17.

Knoxville Police responded to I-40 East west of Midway Road, where two people were pronounced dead at the scene and three others suffered various serious injuries.

According to Knoxville Police, during the investigation it was believed that two eastbound vehicles were involved in a rear-end collision.

According to Knoxville police, one vehicle came to rest in one lane of I-40 East after the first collision. The other vehicle overturned, rolled across all three lanes and left the road before coming to a stop in the median, police said.

According to police, a passerby stopped to help immediately after the first accident, but then the vehicle was hit by an ambulance that could not stop in time to avoid the collision.

Lee Boone, 76, of Roanoke, and the passerby who stopped to help were pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman involved in the first crash was believed to be under the influence of alcohol and was charged with driving under the influence, according to police. Police believe Boone struck her from behind, causing the first crash.

The accident remains under investigation by Knoxville Police Department accident reconstruction personnel.

Once the investigation is complete, the file will be turned over to the Knox County District Attorney's Office for review.
