Chappell Roan would rather “get arrested” than try acting

Actors want to sing, singers want to act, directors want to act… sometimes. But not Chappell Roan. The chart-topper, drag lover, festival-conquering pop star of the year, whose shows are full of dramatic looks and choreography, didn't mince his words in a interview Magazine chat with SNL Star Bowen Yang, when the star of the show asked her if she could imagine becoming an actress to take a break from the madness of being a pop star.

“I say this with peace, love and blessings,” the 26-year-old overnight star of nearly a decade told Yang. “Actors are fucking crazy.” Yang agreed, though Roan noted that she wasn't talking about him, of course. “You can, I'm crazy,” he assured her.

“I don't know you, but I know you're not the vibe I'm talking about,” Roan explained. “I find film people totally disturbing. In the last few weeks, I've been asked, 'Do you want to star in XYZ?' and I said, 'No.'” While Roan didn't reveal which projects she was asked to join, she said she appreciated the attention but definitely didn't want to showcase her talent on the big screen.

On Monday (August 19), the “Red Wine Supernova” star opened up on TikTok about the “harassment” she's been receiving from her fans lately, lamenting that her fans don't set boundaries when it comes to invading her personal life. “I don't care that this crazy behavior comes with the job, the career field that I've chosen. That doesn't make it OK. That doesn't make it normal,” she said. “That doesn't mean I want it, that doesn't mean I like it. I don't want whatever you think you're entitled to when you see a celebrity.”

Although she told Yang in no uncertain terms that she has no interest in adding a hyphen to her job title, Roan revealed that she is not a complete newbie when it comes to acting. “I originally got into music because I wanted to break into acting, and then I moved to Los Angeles and was like, 'Screw it,'” said Roan, who noted that she has some acting training but finds the idea “the most stressful thing in the world.”

“The industry is really so scary and I have so little control over it anymore. I can release music whenever I want. I don't have to wait for a casting director to say, 'It would be great if we cast you and then we'll set your schedule for the next three months,'” Roan said.

She left herself some wiggle room for the right project, adding that if she changed her mind, the project would have to be “really specific and really silly,” in which case she would consider a cameo. However, she added, “I'd rather get arrested.” Besides, next year is completely booked anyway.
