Jury selection continues in trial of man accused of shooting cyclist on Rickenbacker Street

MIAMI – Jury selection continued Tuesday in the trial of a man accused of shooting a bicyclist after an altercation along the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami in 2019.

Kadel Piedrahita, 46, was present as the potential jurors were led into Judge Alberto Milian's courtroom. He is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm in connection with the death of 48-year-old Alex Palencia in August 2019.

They were informed of the charges against Piedrahita and were able to ask questions as lawyers worked to select a fair and impartial jury before the trial began.

The defense argues that Piedrahita was not the attacker.

At some point during the trial, they showed the judge a cell phone video of the fatal altercation and tried to prove that their client had fired the shot in self-defense.

Prosecutors, however, argue that both the video and witness testimony proved the opposite – that Piedrahita was the attacker.

There is no indication that attorneys are ready to seat the jury or that opening statements could be made on Tuesday.
