Cardinals release Brandon Crawford and reinstate Matt Carpenter

ST. LOUIS – The Cardinals released veteran shortstop Brandon Crawford on Tuesday and activated infielder Matt Carpenter from the injured list.

Crawford, a four-time Gold Glove winner and three-time All-Star in 13 seasons with the San Francisco Giants, hit .169 with one home run and four RBIs in 80 batting appearances for the Cardinals this season. His last game was on August 10.

Crawford, 37, was signed as a free agent in the offseason to back up rookie Masyn Winn, who had a strong season as St. Louis' regular leadoff hitter. That meant fewer opportunities for Crawford.

Carpenter had to sit out due to a strained back. An all-round talent, he has a batting average of .255 with three home runs and 11 RBIs.

The Cardinals also sent outfielder Jordan Walker to Triple-A Memphis and recalled infielder Luken Baker ahead of Tuesday night's game against NL Central leader Milwaukee.
