Man allegedly randomly attacked another man in a bar in Jefferson City

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Jefferson City man has been charged with two felonies and one misdemeanor after allegedly attacking another man at Chick's Taproom in Jefferson City.

Nicolas Montgomery, 35, has been charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor. He is being held without bail in the Cole County Jail, with no court date set.

According to the probable cause statement, Montgomery was intoxicated and allegedly attempted to fight with several people inside the bar, along with another man whose identity was not provided in the probable cause statement. Montgomery allegedly refused to identify himself to officers when they arrived around midnight Tuesday.

The bar manager allegedly asked Montgomery to pay his bill and leave, but Montgomery refused, the statement said. He allegedly told police he wanted to handle the situation “the hard way” and slammed his phone on the bar while glaring aggressively at officers,” the statement said.

Police arrested Montgomery while he was resisting, the statement said.

A witness allegedly told police that Montgomery and another man tried to pick a fight with people in the bar, the statement said. The witness and the victim had no connection to either man, the statement said. The victim was found by the witness lying on the ground with blood on his head, the statement said.

The victim later told police in the emergency room that he had been standing on the southwest side of the building near a retaining wall, court documents say. The victim repeated to police that Montgomery and the other man “tried to fight with everybody,” the statement said. The victim claimed Montgomery threw a sneak punch at him for no reason and the victim lost consciousness after about 15 seconds, court documents say.

The victim had a three-inch cut that required stitches and was bleeding from one ear when police spoke to him, court documents say.
