Berkeley man leads police on chase and is arrested with drugs and alcohol

A 28-year-old man was arrested Monday after leading Berkeley County Sheriff's Office officers on a chase while driving more than 30 miles per hour over the speed limit.

DeShone Bernard Rivers was charged with failure to stop at a blue light, reckless driving, repeated driving while license suspended and unlawful transportation of alcohol, according to a news release from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

Early Monday morning, officers observed two vehicles traveling at 96 mph in a 65 mph zone, law enforcement said.

Officers then initiated a traffic stop during which a vehicle was stopped. However, Rivers' vehicle did not stop and continued on North Main Street toward Sigma Drive. He made a U-turn and drove in the other direction while attempting to elude officers.

The pursuit continued and led to College Park Road, where police set up stop sticks to disable fleeing vehicles.

Rivers drove a few more miles, stopped on Ladson Road at Old Trolly Road, and then fled on foot.

He was immediately arrested and the vehicle was searched. 12 grams of marijuana and an open bottle of tequila were found. A driver's license check revealed that his license was revoked. This was his second violation of the driving without a license ban in the last five years.

When asked by deputies why he ran, Rivers said he did it because it was his birthday and he wanted to go home.
