Yankees' SP Luis Gil leaves the game against Guardians with a back injury

Luis Gil didn't last long on Tuesday, leaving the Yankees' game against the Guardians in the fourth inning with a trainer by his side.

A short time later, the Yankees announced that the right-hander had to leave the field due to a back problem. The team's orthopedist examined Gil after the pitcher left the field. The right-hander will be examined again on Wednesday.

Fortunately for the Yankees, Gil's arm injury isn't the first time he's returned to play since his Tommy John surgery. His workload has been a topic of conversation all season, and he threw with extra rest on Tuesday.

Gil, who last pitched on Aug. 12, went three innings, totaling three hits, three earned runs, six walks, three strikeouts and 78 pitches. Just before leaving the game in the fourth inning, he allowed a solo home run to No. 9 hitter Brayan Rocchi.

Gil, 26, has pitched a career-high 124.2 innings this season and has a 3.39 ERA in 24 starts.

This is an evolving story.
