The family of a man shot and killed by a FWPD officer last month is watching bodycam footage of the incident

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The family of a man shot by a Fort Wayne Police Department officer on the campus of Purdue University in Fort Wayne in July has now seen footage of the shooting.

Pastor Carlton Lynch, who represents the family of 31-year-old Gawon Kaerey Benson, said body camera footage shows the man posed no threat.

FWPD Officer Jason Fuhrman shot and killed Benson on July 30 after city police were contacted that morning by the DeKalb County Community Corrections Office requesting help in locating him. The office said Benson had not returned to their custody to serve an 80-day sentence in an OWI case.

Police found Benson on the PFW campus near Kettler Circle and Campus Drive after being notified that he may have been armed. They say he failed to comply with officers' commands.

When officers confirmed that Benson was armed, police called for backup. Immediately afterward, police fired the fatal shots.

Lynch said he and his family were only shown three footage, despite being told there were up to seven body camera footage of the incident. When asked why they were only shown one of the officer's cameras, he was told the FWPD's Internal Investigations Division had only released those three.

“The least the Fort Wayne Police Department and the City of Fort Wayne can do is be transparent enough to release all body cameras,” Lynch said.

The FWPD has not yet released the footage to the public. Lynch said he believes all videos should be shown to the family before they are made public.

The shooting remains under investigation by the FWPD, while the Indiana State Police, PFW Police Department, Allen County Coroner's Office and Allen County District Attorney's Office are conducting independent investigations.
