Family of a slain Texas woman speaks out after police solve unsolved case

Charles Wolfe said her sister Susan Wolfe loved helping people.

AUSTIN, Texas – After 44 years, Austin police say they have found one of the people responsible for the 1980 murder of 25-year-old Susan Wolfe.

Her brother, Charles Wolfe, said his sister enjoyed helping people and was studying to be a nurse.

“I see here a person who cared for other people. She had so much potential. That potential was extinguished in the prime of her life,” said Charles Wolfe.

On January 9, 1980, Susan Wolfe was abducted while on her way to a friend's house on Franklin Street, according to police. A witness told police that a car stopped, the driver got out, and arrested her.

Susan Wolfe was found dead the next day. Police said she had been sexually assaulted, battered and shot in the head.

“An open wound that blackened in our family,” said Charles Wolfe.

Now, four decades later, police said Deck Brewer Jr. could be linked to the crime through DNA, prompting a court to issue an arrest warrant for murder. However, Brewer is currently in a Massachusetts prison for another crime.

“More than four decades of unsolved cases,” said Charles Wolfe. “It is a journey… the first step toward solving the crime, but we will not rest until those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.”

Charles Wolfe said he never gave up hope and wanted to see Brewer extradited to Austin.

Police say they are still looking for a second person who was in the car with Brewer the night of Susan Wolfe's murder.

Austin police say authorities in Massachusetts will not extradite Brewer until his current prison sentence is completed on Wednesday, August 28. After that, the Travis County Sheriff's Office will arrange his transfer to Texas.
