How much prison time does Salinas-born UFC legend Cain Velasquez face?

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, 42, pleaded no contest Friday to a 2022 vigilante shooting, according to Santa Clara County. During an 11-mile high-speed chase that led into busy streets of San Jose, Velasquez fired several shots from his registered .40-caliber handgun, according to a county statement. Santa Clara prosecutors said he faces a maximum of 40 years and four months to life in prison, otherwise he could receive a minimum sentence of probation without additional pretrial detention. Velasquez pleaded guilty to 10 felonies, including attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, three counts of assault with a firearm and several other felonies, prosecutors said. The premeditated charge was dropped before the deal. Velasquez shot multiple times at a truck carrying three occupants, including a man accused of sexually assaulting Velasquez's relative. “Velasquez began shooting at the victims at an intersection in Morgan Hill. As they attempted to flee, he rammed their vehicle and fired more shots at them, striking the driver in the arm as they drove past the Charter School of Morgan Hill, which was closed for the day,” a statement from the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office said. The target was injured in the incident. “This defendant decided to become judge, jury and executioner. His actions endangered innocent bystanders, including young children and their parents, who could have been injured or killed when he shot his intended victim,” said District Attorney Jeff Rosen. “We have excellent law enforcement in this county. Let them do their jobs.” The intended victim, Harry Goularte, 43, continues to face a pending child abuse charge. Goularte is currently at large after a judge released him with GPS monitoring. Velasquez will be back in court at 9 a.m. on Oct. 18, where he will be assigned another sentencing date. Velasquez pleaded guilty to 10 felonies, including attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, three counts of assault with a firearm and several other crimes, prosecutors said. The charge of premeditation was dropped before the plea agreement.

Velasquez fired multiple shots at a truck carrying three people, including a man accused of sexually assaulting a relative of Velasquez.

“Velasquez began shooting at the victims at an intersection in Morgan Hill. As they attempted to flee, he rammed their vehicle and fired more shots at them, striking the driver in the arm as they passed the Charter School of Morgan Hill, which was on holiday,” the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office said in a statement.

The intended victim, 43-year-old Harry Goularte, still faces child abuse charges. Goularte is currently at large after a judge released him with GPS monitoring.

Velasquez will return to court on October 18 at 9 a.m. for a new sentencing date.
