A Wausau man is in custody on felony charges following a brawl in downtown Wausau Sunday night that left one man dead.

Thomas Lee Schroeder, 43, is in custody after hitting a man, causing him to fall to the street and lose consciousness in the 400 block of Washington Street.

The victim succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

According to a press release from the Wausau Police Department:

Police were called to the 400 block of Washington Street around 6:20 p.m. Sunday after a 911 caller reported a fight between two adult males.

According to the caller, one man hit the other, causing the victim to fall to the street. When officers arrived, they found the victim unconscious and lying on his back. He probably had a head injury.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The suspect, Schroeder, was last seen leaving the scene on foot heading northeast.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., an officer found the suspect in the 300 block of N. 4th Street as he was returning to the crime scene. After a brief struggle, Schroeder was arrested.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Schroeder knew the victim, 53-year-old Chad Lattimer.

On Monday evening, Lattimer succumbed to injuries sustained in the fight.

Schroeder is currently being held in the Marathon County Jail and is facing charges of first-degree murder, resisting police and evading bail.
