Twitch users devastated as streaming platform hikes subscription prices again

Twitch has announced another increase in subscription prices after already raising costs in the summer.

On August 21, Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch announced that prices for new Tier 1 subscriptions and gift subscriptions for mobile viewers would increase starting in October.

“Starting October 1, we're increasing prices for new Tier 1 and gift subscriptions in the mobile app in over 40 countries,” the site announced in a post on X. “We'll notify streamers and subscribers in those countries via email.”

In an email seen by Dexerto, Twitch confirmed that the cost of subscriptions in the US would increase by $2, up to $7.99 for a Tier 1 subscription – a 33% increase.

This news comes after Twitch increased the price of subscriptions in the US by $1 in July, from $4.99 to $5.99. The United States was one of 30 regions affected by the increase.

The costs of submarines are rising again.

It's important to note that this latest increase only applies to mobile, and tier 2 and tier 3 subscriptions are not affected. Additionally, Apple and Google are cutting mobile payments by 30%, which could explain the decision. However, this hasn't stopped users from voicing their displeasure.

“How do you manage to keep piling up defeat after defeat? It shocks me,” one replied.

“Oh god, wasn't that enough to raise prices a few months ago? Another big L,” said another.

“Please stop raising subscription prices. It's hurting small streamers! So many regular subscribers had to cancel their subscriptions when you raised prices to $5.99, and mobile prices are already ridiculously high,” someone else demanded.

The recent increase in Twitch subscribers also comes a month after a Wall Street Journal report suggested that the platform's employees feared further mass layoffs as Amazon continues to lose money on the streaming platform.

In January 2024, the site laid off 500 employees, representing 35% of the company's total workforce.
