This dark crime thriller just dropped out of Netflix's top 10

While popular series like “Emily in Paris” and “American Murder: Laci Peterson” dominated Netflix’s top 10 last week, a crime thriller you’ve probably never heard of made it onto this list—and it scored perfect marks on Rotten Tomatoes.

Currently in third place (as of August 21) is Dark Winds, which is about two Navajo tribal cops who must investigate a series of dark crimes in the Southwest in the 1970s. When I first watched this series, I had no idea I was about to discover a truly gripping crime thriller (and it came at just the right time when I needed something to watch after The Walking Dead).

I recently rewatched a few episodes and this series feels like it could be something special for me. It is already generating a lot of buzz on one of the best streaming services and I am ready to jump back in and follow every twist and turn. But is it something You should you watch? Here's everything you need to know about Dark Winds on Netflix.

What is “Dark Winds” about?

Dark Winds is a crime drama set in the American Southwest in the 1970s. The series follows Navajo tribal police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) as they investigate a series of crimes on the Navajo reservation.

It is based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, a renowned author known for his crime novels set in the American Southwest. The main characters, Leaphorn and Chee, are both deeply rooted in their Navajo heritage, and their personal and spiritual lives often intersect with their work as police officers.

Blending crime, mystery and Native American culture, the series offers a unique insight into the struggles of the Navajo community. It has also been praised for its ability to tackle important issues such as cultural identity, spirituality and the impact of colonialism.

“Dark Winds” is a thriller that you can watch in one go

If you like shows that keep you hooked with suspense, Dark Winds is the kind of thriller you'll want to binge through in a single weekend. The series is set in the vast, rugged landscapes of the American Southwest, which alone gives it a unique atmosphere unlike anything else on television.

“Dark Winds” is gripping And it's binge-watchable because it combines the suspense of a classic crime thriller with the depth of a psychological drama. When you follow Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, you're not just watching them solve crimes – you're drawn into their world and grappling with their personal issues and the complexities of life on the reservation. The series doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of human nature either, and each episode leaves you feeling “just one more.”

Critics also raved about this series when the first season came out in 2022. Both seasons currently have 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is quite a rare feat. Graeme Virtue of the Guardian agreed with the aspect of being able to watch the series in one sitting: “It's a twisting, atmospheric mystery that still feels fast-paced enough to be tackled in a binge or two.”

Meanwhile, Judy Berman of TIME Magazine said the show was “gripping, superbly filmed and carried by a great cast. Dark Winds is a very good show and a very important one.”

Should you stream Dark Winds?

You should definitely stream Dark Winds. With its gripping storytelling, rich cultural depth, and intense dramatic aspects that offer unpredictable twists, it's a must-watch for any thriller fan, especially now that it's getting the attention it deserves on the streamer.
