Dozens of protesters arrested Tuesday night after clashes with police near the DNC

Chicago police are preparing for another night of protests after clashes with dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators near the Israeli consulate on Tuesday.

“They showed up with the intent to commit acts of violence and vandalism,” said Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling.

Officers allowed demonstrators to exercise their right to protest, but began arresting people when they became aggressive and broke through police lines.

Scripps News observed one of the protesters calling on others to shut down the Democratic National Convention while others burned an American flag.

Snelling said between 55 and 60 people were arrested Tuesday night. Two of the protesters were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Two police officers were also injured but refused medical treatment, Snelling said.

Among the dozens arrested were three journalists, Snell said.
Without giving details of the arrests, Snell warned media representatives not to become involved in “mass arrests.”

“If you do not move and follow our instructions at this time, you may be breaking the law yourself,” Snelling said.

A makeshift courthouse has been set up to negotiate with protesters angry about the war in Gaza and continued US support for the Gaza Strip.

The National Lawyers Guild of Chicago has offered assistance to protesters who were arrested during the demonstration.
