Two Vancouver police officers charged with assault after off-duty incident

Two Vancouver police officers were charged with assault on Tuesday (August 20) over an off-duty incident in December 2023.

According to online court records, Officer Joshua Wong is charged with two counts of assault and Officer Brian Hunt is charged with one count.

Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Tania Visintin told Black Press Media that the department immediately notified the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner following the incident and that the New Westminster Police Department has launched a criminal investigation. The British Columbia Public Prosecution Service filed charges against Wong and Hunt on Tuesday.

Visintin said neither officer is currently working in an “operational capacity.” Black Press Media has asked for clarification on whether the officers are still working in any capacity and how long they have been away from their regular duties.

Wong and Hunt are scheduled to appear at the New Westminster courthouse on September 18.

Wong was one of numerous officers investigated in connection with the arrest and death of Myles Gray in 2015. None of the officers involved were ever charged.
