See how a hawk caught in the net at Newton Golf Course was rescued

Thanks to the intervention of the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) and the Newton Fire Department, the 12-hour entanglement of a red-tailed hawk in a protective net along a golf course in Newton was ended on Wednesday.

The hawk was left hanging about 50 feet above the ground after becoming entangled in the net, according to an ARL news release. ARL and the Newton Fire Department responded to the Woodland Golf Club at noon Wednesday.

The Newton Fire Department brought a ladder truck, and after some assessment, a firefighter climbed the ladder behind an ARL agent, ARL said and a video showed this.

The couple managed to free the hawk and place it in a carrier, ARL added, thanking the Newton Fire Department for “enabling a quick rescue, increasing the safety of all personnel on site and helping to reduce stress on the hawk.”

ARL said although the hawk was trapped in the net for about half a day, it appeared to be unharmed and was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation clinic as a precautionary measure.
