Gas leak shuts down roads in Johnson Creek | News

JOHNSON CREEK, Wisconsin – A gas main break in Johnson Creek closed the area around Milwaukee Street and North Watertown Street for more than three hours Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson Creek Fire Department Chief Ben Patterson said emergency crews responded immediately and found that a large, high-pressure underground gas pipeline had been hit, sending a massive cloud of natural gas about 30 feet into the air.

Patterson said residents were advised to shelter at home while the investigation began.

Emergency crews began evacuating everyone in the immediate area and employees of all local authorities began evacuating homes and businesses parallel to the intersection.

WE Energies crews worked to slow the gas main break and restore power to the entire area while crews worked to secure gas service. After WE Energies safely secured gas service to the affected area, fire crews monitored air quality in each of the affected buildings.

No hazards were identified and each home or business was returned to the owner or occupant.

Johnson Creek Fire said roads reopened at 12:40 p.m.
