NEW YORK – Pinch hitter Jesse Winker opened the ninth inning with his first home run for the New York Mets, giving them another thrilling 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.

Mets starter Sean Manaea retired his first 17 batters and Mark Vientos gave New York a 3-2 lead with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Francisco Lindor also hit a home run and JD Martinez scored a run on a grounder to help the Mets win two of three in the series. New York began the day 2 1/2 games behind Atlanta, securing the final playoff spot in the National League.

After a 5-4 home win, the Mets begin a crucial 10-game road trip Thursday night with the first of four games in San Diego.

Edwin Díaz (5-1) struck out two players in a perfect inning to earn his second win of the series. The first victory came on Monday night when Francisco Alvarez's solo home run in the ninth inning gave the Mets a 4-3 victory.

Seranthony Domínguez (3-4) allowed both home runs that ended the game.

Winker, acquired from Washington in a trade on July 28, fought back from an 0-2 deficit and hit a 98-mph fastball the other way into left-center field for his second major league walk-off home run.

Manaea was one strike away from completing six perfect innings when he hit Jackson Holliday behind the shoulder with a 2-2 fastball. Austin Slater hit the next pitch the other way into right field for a two-run homer that tied the game at 2-2.

Baltimore began the day with a half-game lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees.

RANGERS 1, PIRATES 0: Wyatt Langford's single scored pinch-runner Ezequiel Duran with two outs in the ninth inning and gave Texas a home win.

Jonah Heim and Adolis García hit singles against David Bednar (3-6) to open the bottom of the ninth inning. Duran, who was walking for Heim, got to third base on a flyout by Nathaniel Lowe to deep right field. Bednar struck out Josh Jung with a 3-2 fastball after García stole second base, but Langford hit an RBI single to center field.

The decisive run ended a streak of 22 scoreless innings for the Rangers, who won two of three games against the Pirates and ended a streak of seven consecutive losing series.

Kirby Yates (5-2) threw a perfect ninth inning for Texas.

NOTES

YANKEES: A day after leaving the game in the fourth inning against the Cleveland Guardians, starting pitcher Luis Gil was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain.

Manager Aaron Boone said he expects the rookie to return soon.

“It's not bad, it's just lower back pain,” Boone said before the Yankees resumed a three-game series against Cleveland. “I think he's feeling better today, and I hope he can stay pretty active during this time and hopefully get back on the field.”

Gil is 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA in 25 starts, but has set a major league record with 66 walks. He has thrown 124 2/3 innings after missing most of the last two seasons because of Tommy John surgery.
