ASAP Rocky releases one of his best music videos to date with “HIGHJACK”

ASAP Rocky's comeback season is upon us. Fans have been waiting for new Rocky music since 2018, and the rapper is finally ready to deliver it. Don't be stupid is set to drop on August 30. Now we have a music video for ASAP Rocky's new single “HIGHJACK.” The song didn't top the charts when it dropped on August 2. However, it was proof that the Harlem rapper still had what it took to make a slick, murky bop. The music video for “HIGHJACK,” released on August 21, takes the song up a notch, showcasing ASAP Rocky in a form fans haven't seen in over a decade.

ASAP Rocky broke out with a unique black and white aesthetic. ASAP Mob were dangerous to begin with, but Rocky gave them a stylish flair. These strengths are on display in the music video for “HIGHJACK.” It starts off minimalistic but quickly descends into a beautiful, surreal collection of images. Rocky raps in different corners of the camera frame as the perspective of the rooms around him changes. At one point, he is seen throwing down bars in a frame reminiscent of an MC Escher painting. It's all very trippy, which segues perfectly into the chorus of “HIGHJACK” sung by Jessica Pratt.

ASAP Rocky builds on his original aesthetic

The most startling imagery of “HIGHJACK,” however, remains for the song's second half. While it's cool to see ASAP Rocky in a series of black-and-white scenes, Jessica Pratt's chorus unfolds a kaleidoscope of wild imagery. Members of the ASAP Mob seemingly celebrate in slow motion as a camera pans through various tableaux of Rocky in different outfits. One pair of hands wears rings with the album's title, Don't be stupidis written on it. In the background, a reflection cradles a silver grill. What is particularly strange is that a spotted Rocky gets out of bed and puts on a suit.

The music video ends with two contrasting images. One shows Rocky standing over a tall building and the other shows the rapper facing the wall in a mysterious room. Neither narrative is resolved, leading us to believe there is more to come in the future. Don't be stupid Music videos. “HIGHJACK” may not be a huge hit, but the song and video couldn’t have done a better job of generating interest for what Rocky does next.
