Man allegedly kicked pregnant woman on stairs

JONESBORO, Arkansas (KAIT) – Police have arrested a man after he allegedly got into an argument with a pregnant woman and even kicked her on the stairs.

Craighead County District Court Judge David Boiling on Wednesday, August 21, found there was probable cause to charge Maxwell Thomas Clements, 23, of Jonesboro with third-degree domestic violence against a pregnant woman, a Class D felony.

According to the affidavit, officers were directed by dispatch on Tuesday, August 20, to contact the victim regarding an argument with her husband, Clements, on County Road 468.

The victim said she was cleaning and was holding Clements' empty liquor bottle when he took it from her and “started hitting her on the head with it.”

“Maxwell also grabbed her by the shoulders, laid her on the couch and began punching her in the face and body,” officials said.

The affidavit states the victim began yelling at Clements to stop. Eventually, she was able to escape and tried to get to her car to drive away.

As she was going down the stairs, Clements kicked her in the back, but the victim was able to hold on to the railing and avoid falling and further injury.

The victim told officers she was pregnant and “worried about the unborn child.” The affidavit said the victim had bruising on her arms and back.

Officers later arrested Clements and took him to the Craighead County Detention Center, where he is being held on $150,000 cash or surety bail.

Judge Boling also ordered Clements to wear a GPS ankle bracelet upon his release following a June 2022 incident in which Clements was accused of threatening Taco Bell employees with a gun.

According to court records, Clements was sentenced to 12 months and 30 days probation after pleading guilty to first-degree assault (a Class A misdemeanor) and second-degree criminal damage to property for damage less than $1,000 (a Class B misdemeanor).

Clements' next court date is scheduled for Friday, September 27.
