Gas prices fall again | News

PLATTSBURGH — The average price of gasoline in the U.S. fell for the third week in a row, falling 4.2 cents from the previous week to $3.37 per gallon. In New York state, prices fell 2.8 cents to an average of $3.49 per gallon on Monday, according to a survey of 6,118 New York gas stations by GasBuddy.

In New York, prices are 9.7 cents lower than a month ago, but 38.5 cents per gallon lower than last year.

According to data from GasBuddy, the national average is 11.4 cents per gallon lower than last month and 47.8 cents per gallon lower than last year.

“Gasoline and diesel prices continue to fall across much of the country as demand wanes over the summer. Lower demand in other oil-consuming countries is also helping to increase downward pressure on pump prices as we approach Labor Day,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“With little new action in the Middle East to push prices higher and Hurricane Ernesto still far out to sea, it looks like the downward trend could continue in the coming week. As more schools reopen, gasoline demand is likely to continue to weaken. With the switch to winter gasoline starting in most countries in less than a month, gasoline prices will soon experience their seasonal cooldown – just as temperatures will soon.”

According to demand data from GasBuddy, U.S. retail gasoline demand rose 0.1 percent in the week ending Saturday, August 17.

The most common price per gallon for motorists is $3.29, 20 cents less than last week.

The top 10% of gas stations in the country average $4.48 per gallon and the bottom 10% average $2.83 per gallon.

The states with the lowest average prices per gallon are Mississippi at $2.91, Oklahoma at $2.92 and Texas at $2.97.

In Hawaii, California and Washington, prices per gallon are the highest, averaging $4.59, $4.52 and $4.14, respectively.
