OGDEN, Utah, August 22, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – A family friend accused of aggravated murder in the death of 2-year-old twins and sexually abusing both children while babysitting was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Jonathan Allen Dunn, 36, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder a week ago, which earned him a life sentence without parole, while the two sexual abuse charges resulted in two sentences of 15 years to life, according to court records.

At the time of the crimes on December 21, 2023, Dunn was working as a babysitter for the Roy family. When Dunn reported a medical emergency that morning and was called to the scene in the area of 4450 South and 1950 West, police eventually arrested him on suspicion of murder and several abuse charges.

Two-year-old twins were immediately taken to hospital with blunt force injuries, where the twin brother died, police said at the time. The toddler's sister survived.

Dunn was a friend of the victims' parents who was described as an uncle, police said, but was not a relative.

According to Dunn's probable cause statement, police found the boy unconscious and not breathing on the porch of the home. The boy had bruises all over his body and was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the affidavit states.

Police also found the boy's twin sister sitting on a couch in the house “with multiple visible bruises on her face,” the indictment states. She was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for a brain hemorrhage.

Dunn was previously convicted of second-degree child abuse in 2017 and sentenced to prison.
