Allen County Jail inmate dies in hospital after medical emergency

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The Allen County Sheriff's Department said an inmate died Wednesday evening at the Allen County Detention Center as a result of a medical emergency.

PIO Adam Griffith confirmed to 21Alive that an inmate at the Allen County Jail was taken to the hospital where he later died as a result of a medical emergency.

This is the second death of an inmate in less than a week. On Friday, 36-year-old Paul Lee Green died in custody.

Several deaths were reported at the Allen County Jail last year. In October 2023, inmate Jonathan Ohlwine committed suicide in the prison. Less than three months later, in January 2024, Indiana State Police officers found James Shaffer unconscious in another apparent suicide.

Then inmate Steven Perry suffered an overdose in February. Two men, 27-year-old Taylor D. Hunt and 33-year-old Brian L. Boggs II, were charged in his death.

This is an ongoing investigation.
