Crime in Durham | Police release new statistics on crime in the Bull City

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) – Durham Police have released new statistics on crime in the city.

Police Chief Patrice Andrews will present the second quarter crime report to council members later this afternoon.

The new figures show that there has been a slight increase in violent crimes. The clearance rate for homicides is 50 percent.

Here are the numbers:

-24 murders, 4.3% more than in the same period last year

-87 rapes, an increase of 8.8%

-605 serious bodily injuries, an increase of 6.1%

There was also a slight increase in property crimes in the city. Juvenile crime amounted to 289 cases.

Durham Mayor Leo Williams recently launched the Bull City Future Fund, a community-business partnership to support nonprofits working with young people.

Williams has said one of his priorities since taking office is the creation of a mentoring program to keep young people away from violence.
