Detroit Lions OL Penei Sewell suffers foot injury

The Detroit Lions suffered a shock when Penei Sewell suffered a foot injury during an intra-team practice game and was forced to leave practice early on Wednesday.

The All-Pro right tackle reportedly remained on the turf for a few moments before eventually leaving the field on his own and getting treatment from trainers. The team said he was being evaluated for a foot injury but did not disclose what type of injury it was.

According to a report from Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network, Sewell is doing “well” following his injury. What “well” means is unclear, but it appears Sewell and the Lions may have avoided a more serious injury.

The former Oregon Ducks star, who signed a four-year, $112 million contract extension in April – a then-record sum – was named a first-team All-Pro in 2023 and has been a Pro Bowler the past two years.

The No. 7 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has been pretty solid in his first three seasons in the league. He's only missed one game in his career, and that was due to illness. He hasn't missed a snap in two years. With Week 1 of the regular season just two weeks away, the Lions need to have one of the league's best tackles healthy and on the field.
