California prison officials investigate inmate murder

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the death of an inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison as a homicide. CDCR officials say Miguel A. Espino allegedly attacked another inmate at the prison, Michael R. Spengler, around 10:31 a.m. Monday. Spengler was pronounced dead by arriving paramedics at 11:08 a.m. While Spengler's exact cause of death has not yet been released by the Monterey County Coroner, CDCR says an inmate-made weapon was found at the scene. Espino will remain in restricted housing while the prison's Investigate Services Unit and the Monterey County District Attorney's Office investigate. Espino is being held at Salinas Valley State Prison on charges of attempted premeditated murder, aggravated assault, personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon, aggravated assault, arson of an inhabited structure and arson under special circumstances. He is currently serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole.

Espino will remain in restricted housing while the jail's Investigate Services Unit and the Monterey County District Attorney's Office investigate.

Espino is incarcerated at Salinas Valley State Prison on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon, aggravated assault, arson of an inhabited structure and arson with special circumstances.

He is currently serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole.
