Former Cape Cod accountant stole more than $1.3 million from her employer, federal authorities say

The former bookkeeper for a Falmouth flooring company wrote checks to herself on her employer's bank account, embezzling more than $1.3 million from her employment, federal prosecutors said.

Susan Figuerido, 73, of Falmouth was charged with wire fraud and filing a false tax return, Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy said in a statement. She has agreed to plead guilty to the charges against her.

However, a hearing on the vows has not yet been scheduled by the federal court in Boston, the statement said.

Between June 2015 and February 2023, Figuerido embezzled more than $1.3 million from her job by writing checks to herself on her employer's bank account, federal prosecutors said.

To conceal her plot, Figuerido did not record the checks she wrote to herself in her employer's accounting system, prosecutors said.

In addition, she failed to report or account for the embezzled money on her federal income tax return, resulting in a tax loss of nearly $353,000, prosecutors added.
