‘900-day project’: Jacksonville Beach neighbors wait to restore road and beach access – Action News Jax

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — South Jacksonville Beach is undergoing a complete transformation. City leaders are calling it the “900-Day Project” and have turned streets into a construction site.

First Street is covered with construction equipment, dirt and detour signs as crews work to replace and repair numerous items.

“I wish they hadn't just set up shop at the beach access next to my house,” said resident Denyse Mahoney. “I'm afraid they're not going away anytime soon, and that's a real inconvenience for a lot of people.”

Mahoney is not wrong. The project will not be completed until 2026. She lives on First Street and said there have even been times when her water has been turned off.

“They want to clean up after lunch and there is no water. Luckily it hasn't interrupted my showers,” Mahoney said.

The reconstruction is designed to help with flooding and will also create new sidewalks, driveways, lighting and parking. The project will also replace existing water and sewerage systems that are reaching the end of their life.

This project dashboard outlines the seven-phase project. The city anticipates it could be completed in 600 days, but either way, we still have a lot of work to do. Currently, crews are 101 days into the project and are currently in phase two. The current phase covers First Street, Seventh Avenue, Eighth Avenue, and Ninth Avenue.

Everything east of Third Street is scheduled to be finished by March of next year. Phase five in March 2026 will also affect A1A.

The project is expected to be completed in June 2026.

We reached out to the City of Jacksonville Beach about the project and received this statement.

“Project planning and design began in 2021, with construction beginning in 2023. It is often referred to as a 900-day project and is progressing well. It is estimated that this project will take just over 600 more days to complete, but that is an estimate and can vary greatly depending on weather, construction delays, and other factors. The project includes rebuilding the city blocks east of SR A1A, from 5th Avenue South to 10th Avenue South. Work includes stormwater disposal improvements to improve surface water flow in this area, construction of new sidewalks, driveways, lighting, adding public parking, and replacing existing water and sewer facilities that are reaching the end of their life. While this project may cause inconvenience to our residents and visitors, particularly due to the proximity to the beach, it is an essential and priority project to ensure safety and a high quality of life for our community. This project consists of 7 phases. Phase 1 was completed in July 2024 and it is estimated that Phase 2 will be completed in just over 100 days.”
