Bizarre case: Nashville mother attempted suicide while in prison “for drowning her 7-year-old daughter because she was fed up with her”

A Nashville mother accused of drowning her seven-year-old daughter “because she wanted some peace” made a bizarre attempt to commit suicide in prison.

Brandi Elliott, 33, is in the Sumner County Jail without bail awaiting trial on a first-degree murder charge for the drowning of her daughter, Piper, in Drakes Creek in Hendersonville last month.

But on Sunday, she was being treated for banging her head against the wall in her cell, causing two black eyes, News Channel 5 reported.

On Monday, she reportedly fell headfirst from her bunk onto the concrete floor. Elliott was taken to a local hospital in a breathing condition but is now in stable condition.

After her release from the hospital, Elliott will be transferred to a state facility better suited to dealing with her self-destructive behavior while she awaits indictment and trial by grand jury.

Her defense attorneys are now expected to use her mental health issues as an argument that she has diminished mental capacity in order to avoid criminal liability.

Elliott had already claimed at her first court hearing last month that she was suffering from mental health problems.

“When my daughter was two, I somehow lost control, like this time,” she said in court.

“I had postnatal depression and they gave me medication for it. I had really bad sleep.”

But both her lawyer and the prosecutors stated at the time that they did not want her to undergo a psychiatric examination.

She has no criminal record and worked at McDonald's.

But on July 13, Elliott reportedly decided to take Piper to a shallow area near Drake's Creek and hold her underwater until bubbles appeared.

She reportedly told the child to be quiet while holding him underwater “like a largemouth bass,” WKRN reports.

When police later questioned her about her daughter's death, Elliott reportedly told officers she was having a bad day and Piper wasn't giving her any “time to herself.”

However, the mother said she did not realize what she had done until it was too late and emergency responders attempted to revive Piper with CPR.

Police say family members are now acting as witnesses in the investigation, while prosecutors are considering the death penalty for Elliott if she is convicted of murder.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up for Piper's father, Jon Elliott.

“Jon will need as many donations as possible for funeral arrangements and basic daily needs, he only receives a small disability check each month,” it said.

Jon, who served in Iraq, also posted a tribute to Piper online, writing: “I will miss my little girl forever.”
