Suspect arrested after fatal accident

Nijel Hitchcock, 24, was shot outside Danny's Place and later found dead after his car crashed near the scene.

CONCORD, NC – A man was arrested after shooting a person who was later killed in a car crash.

According to Concord police, the shooting occurred around 8:45 a.m. Thursday in front of Danny's Place on Church Street.

According to police, 26-year-old Deamonte Howard shot 24-year-old Nijel Hitchcock and then fled the area. Howard was tracked down nearby and arrested.

After the shooting, Hitchcock got into the back seat of a car. The car crashed into another car and a utility pole near the intersection of Church Street and Winecoff Avenue. Hitchcock was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Hitchcock and Howard knew each other and that the violence was not a random act.

Howard is charged with manslaughter and weapons possession. He is being held without bail in the Cabarrus County Jail.
