San Diego police identify suspect accused of shooting his mother and two others in Point Loma – NBC 7 San Diego

A man arrested in connection with the shooting of his elderly mother and two other people who died in a Point Loma home Wednesday afternoon was identified by police Thursday.

William Bushey, 60, was arrested on double murder charges after shooting a woman in her 60s and a man in his 30s at the Zola Street home, San Diego police said. He is also charged with attempted murder of his mother, who is in her 80s and remains hospitalized after the shooting.

Colleen Crowden, a neighbor and friend, said the woman who lived there was June Bushey. June Bushey has a daughter and grandchildren who are the same age as the two people killed. San Diego police were expected to release the identities of the victims on Friday.

Crowden said June Bushey has lived in the Point Loma home her entire life. The gray single-family home was her childhood home and she graduated from Point Loma High School, which is just a block away.

According to Crowden, William Bushey lived with his mother for the last two decades.

Two people are dead and a woman in her 80s is fighting for her life after she was allegedly shot by her son. NBC 7's Dave Summers reports August 21, 2024.

Just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Crowden heard a commotion inside her neighbor's house, but didn't immediately realize it was gunshots. She saw her neighbor come outside covered in blood and thought she had cut herself. When police arrived, she pieced together the details.

Crowden was speaking to police on her own patio when she saw officers taking Bushy out of her neighbor's house in handcuffs. She told them, “That's your son, Billy,” and the officer shouted to police, “The witness identified the suspect as the victim's son,” she said.

According to Lt. Jud Campbell of the San Diego Police Department, William Bushey was outside the home when officers arrived and was arrested without resistance.

At the scene of Wednesday's shooting, a woman who described herself to police as a close friend of the victims was close to collapsing after learning of the tragedy. She said the family had contacted police a day or two ago to learn that this was exactly what might happen.

“This is my best friend and the police turned her away yesterday,” she was heard telling police.

Campbell said during a news conference that one victim was found in the side yard, while the other may have been found in the kitchen area inside the home. The older woman was found outside the home.

“She was found out here on the street,” Campbell said. “Officers removed her from the scene and began first aid until paramedics came and picked her up and took her to the hospital.”

Her condition on Thursday was unknown.

Officers also discovered a type of shotgun in the front yard near where the suspect was found, which is believed to be the murder weapon, the SDPD said.

The home's garage door looked like it had recently been forced inward, but no vehicle in the area appeared to be responsible. Police later confirmed that patrol officers had forced the door open while checking the scene.

The circumstances leading to the shooting were not immediately clear. The SDPD Homicide Unit is still investigating.

Campbell said several people called 911, including the shooter. He also said there had been previous calls to the apartment, but it was not known what those calls were about or when.

“As part of this investigation, we will look at every point in time where we may have been on that road or had contact with anyone involved,” Campbell said.

Marjie Carver lives on the same street. She was home at the time and did not hear the shots, but saw the helicopter.

“We've lived here for over 20 years and nothing like this has ever happened to us,” Carver said. “I'm stunned that this even happened. It makes me sad that it happened.”

Police ask anyone with information or who knows the family to call Homicide at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
