iPhone 16 camera specs and record button details leaked

Apple will launch the iPhone 16 next month, with rumors pointing to September 10 as a likely date for the event. Almost everything has leaked out about the 2024 iPhones, and I expect Apple Intelligence to be at the heart of Apple's marketing efforts for the iPhone 16 handsets.

But the new iPhones also have to be great cameras, regardless of iOS 18's AI capabilities. That's what we expect from every new iPhone. Well, the camera processing will include AI (machine learning algorithms), but we had that before generative AI became a thing.

A few weeks before Apple's September iPhone event, a new report gives us the alleged specs for all 16 iPhone models. It also claims that all four phones will come with the brand new record button, which I'm so excited about.

A few days ago I told you that the record button is a must-have for me. At the time, a report said that contrary to all previous rumors, only the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max would get this button. AppleInsider Now it is said that all four handsets will be equipped with it.

The record button is a capacitive button in the bottom right corner. This is how your index finger rests on the button when you hold the iPhone 16 in landscape mode to take photos and videos. The following image from a video showing alleged dummy units of the iPhone 16 shows us the same position of the record button.

The button works exclusively with camera apps, so you can't customize it like the Action button. iPhone users can choose whether a press of the button opens the default camera app or an alternative. The report notes that you can't accidentally activate the camera while you have the phone in your pocket.

The capture button also supports all kinds of gestures because it has force sensors. Half-pressing activates autofocus while full-pressing takes the photo. Sliding your finger across the button lets you zoom in and out. Camera app developers are getting new API tools to customize these behaviors to their needs.

The report also listed the camera specifications for the four phones and some of the expected new features:

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus:

  • 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with f/1.6 aperture and 2x telephoto zoom
  • 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • possible support for macro photography

iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max:

  • 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with 1.22 μm pixels, f/1.77 aperture and 2x telephoto quality
  • 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with 0.7 μm pixels (1.4 μm pixels in 12-megapixel mode) and f/2.2 aperture
  • possible 48-megapixel ProRaw photos

Finally, the report states that Apple will introduce a new image format for the iPhone 16 phones. This format is JPEG-XL and it complements the existing HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRaw and ProRAW Max modes.

As for video, Apple allows the iPhone 16 Pro models to record 3K video at 120 frames per second with support for Dolby Vision.

It's unclear where the information came from, but the camera specs are in line with current expectations based on other rumors. Thankfully, we don't have to wait long to find out if it's true. Apple should announce the iPhone 16 keynote date in the coming days.
