Man charged with attempted murder after shots fired at commission candidates in Opa-locka – NBC 6 South Florida

A man was arrested after a fight ended with someone shooting a candidate for Opa-locka City Commission.

According to a police report, Chris Davis, the commission candidate, was walking down Rutland Street Wednesday night when Tommy Johnson confronted him and they began to fight. Then Davis and Anthony Mitchell got into an argument, Davis told police.

According to the report, the dispute was over the two men supporting other candidates for Davis's seat on the city council.

Davis then ran away and “looked around and saw Mr. Johnson in a tactical one-knee stance, apparently preparing to shoot him,” the report said.

Davis then got into his car and heard several gunshots as he drove away, the report said. He later noticed a bullet hole in the driver's door.

Mitchell, who is charged with attempted murder, appeared in court on Thursday. The defense told the judge that there was “no evidence that Mitchell at any time advanced or called for a shooting.” It also said it “makes no sense” why he would be charged with attempted murder “when he is not the shooter, did not give anyone a gun and was not involved in any shooting.”

NBC6 reached out to Davis on Thursday evening and did not receive a response. Mitchell is due back in court on Friday.

It is not yet known what charges Johnson faces. The report states that Johnson denies following Davis and shooting him.
