“There was a murder,” Kromholz told the jury | Highlands News-Sun

The trial of Virgil Lee West began Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, shooting at a vehicle and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of Shawn Ziegler and the serious injuries sustained by Carrie Leaphart in Lorida on July 14, 2015.

This case is the longest awaiting trial before a Highlands County jury – this time consisting of five men and nine women. A series of legal delays and a series of public defenders being assigned and removed from the case have led to the delay. West, who prosecutors say was the shooter, has been in jail since the day of the shooting.
