The iPhone 16 series camera specs have leaked online and Apple fans are already disappointed

As the highly anticipated iPhone 16 release draws closer, new leaks have provided a clearer picture of what Apple fans can expect from the next-generation smartphones. While Apple has yet to confirm the details, sources from AppleInsider revealed major camera upgrades and the introduction of a new record button on all models, increasing excitement ahead of the rumored September 10 launch event.

Camera upgrades on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

Both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature a dual camera on the back with a primary wide-angle camera and a secondary ultra-wide-angle lens. However, significant changes in the configuration and performance of these cameras are expected.

The main features of the camera include:

  1. Vertically stacked lenses: The cameras will be aligned vertically, a departure from the diagonal arrangement of previous models.
  2. Primary wide-angle camera: The main camera also features a 48MP sensor, f/1.6 aperture, and 2x telephoto capabilities, ensuring sharp and detailed images.
  3. Ultra wide angle lens improvement: The ultra-wide-angle camera gets a faster aperture of f/2.2 instead of the previous aperture of f/2.4 to improve low-light photography.
  4. Macro photography: Non-Pro iPhones are expected to support macro photography for the first time, expanding their versatility.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max receive significant camera improvements

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will likely receive more extensive upgrades. The three-camera system – consisting of wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses – will remain, but with significant improvements to the telephoto and ultra-wide lenses.

Highlights of the Pro models include:

  1. 48MP primary sensor: The main camera retains its 48-megapixel sensor with an f/1.78 aperture and can take 2x telephoto shots with 12-megapixel resolution and 1.22-micron pixels for extra detail.
  2. 5x telephoto lens: A 5x telephoto lens, previously exclusive to the Pro Max, will now be available on both Pro models, replacing the 3x lens on the iPhone 15 Pro.
  3. Improved ultra-wide angle lens: The ultra-wide-angle camera is expanded to 48 megapixels and features pixel binning technology that adjusts the pixel size depending on the shooting mode – 0.7 microns for full resolution or 1.4 microns in quad pixel mode.
  4. ProRaw support: The improved ultra-wide-angle lens allows users to capture 48MP ProRaw photos for greater flexibility in post-processing.

In addition to these camera upgrades, sources have hinted at the introduction of a new image format, JPEG-XL, alongside existing formats such as HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRaw, and ProRAW Max. In addition, the iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to support 3K video recording at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision, offering an exceptional video experience.

Optimized record button for improved camera control

One of the most exciting additions to the iPhone 16 lineup is the introduction of a new capacitive capture button. Located in the bottom right corner of the device, this button is designed to improve photography by providing more tactile control of camera functions. The button is designed to work exclusively with camera apps and allow users to easily lock focus and exposure, zoom in and out, and perform other camera-specific actions with precision. Its capacitive nature ensures it won't be activated accidentally, providing a more intuitive and user-friendly way to capture photos and videos.

Online reactions to iPhone 16 leaks

When details about the iPhone 16 series made the rounds online, they elicited mixed reactions from potential buyers. In the r/apple subreddit, users expressed their disappointment over the leaked camera specs, with some feeling that Apple's advances had become increasingly less effective.

One user complained, “Mobile photo technology seems to be outdated and not much changes in terms of quality. In theory, the specs get better every year (of course), but the quality of the photos produced doesn't change much.” Another echoed a similar sentiment, noting, “Apple has been doing this for decades. It's not like these lenses and sensors can do anything without processing. The question is what processing do you prefer.”

Some users pointed to a perceived drop in image processing quality, while others acknowledged the significant improvement that the jump from 12MP to 48MP brought, especially for those shooting in raw format. However, the general consensus seemed to be one of cautious optimism, with many reserving their final verdict until the iPhones are officially unveiled.
