Jude Bellingham injury: Real Madrid and England fear for midfielder's fitness after suspected leg injury

Jude Bellingham may miss England's upcoming Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland after sustaining a league injury, his club announced.
In a brief statement from Real Madrid on Friday, the club confirmed that examinations by Madrid's medical team had revealed that Bellingham had suffered a leg injury that is expected to keep the England international out of action for four weeks.

“Following the tests carried out today by the Real Madrid medical team on Jude Bellingham, the player has been diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fasciitis muscle in his right leg,” the statement said.

The club added that Bellingham's fitness would continue to be monitored.

Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Los Blancos, did not comment on the situation at his press conference on Friday morning, telling reporters: “He (Bellingham) took a hit, they are examining him.”

The reigning Spanish and European champions could only manage a draw in the opening game of their La Liga season as full-back Ferland Mendy received a red card late in a frustrating 1-1 away draw against Mallorca.

Madrid host Valladolid on Sunday before facing Las Palmas away on Thursday night. They host Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabéu next Sunday in their final game before the international break. Bellingham is expected to miss all three games.

Bellingham's availability for Lee Carsley's first game as interim coach of the England national team against the Republic of Ireland at the start of the new Nations League season in Dublin is now in doubt.

England face Ireland on Sunday 7 September before hosting Finland at Wembley on Tuesday 10 September.

Bellingham was a crucial part of the England team that reached the final of Euro 2024 in Germany this summer, scoring a last-minute overhead kick against Slovakia to send the game into extra time before Harry Kane scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 win.

England lost the final in Berlin 2-1 to Spain. Gareth Southgate announced his resignation as England manager in the days following the match.
