Michelle Obama reacts best to Tim Walz's son Gus's viral DNC moment

Michelle Obama is not the only person touched by Tim Walz and the love he has for his family.

Like much of the nation, the 60-year-old former first lady was touched to see the pride on her son Gus's face as he and his father shared a tender moment together on Wednesday on the final night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

Minnesota Governor Tim, 60, took the stage to accept his party's nomination as Kamala Harris's vice presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

As Tim stepped onto the biggest podium of his career, he was met with tearful smiles and applause from his wife Gwen and their two children, including daughter Hope. But it was Gus' reaction that stole the show. Watch what happened in the clip below.

When Gus proudly pointed to his father and declared, “That’s my daddy,” with tears streaming down his face, it elicited a heartfelt reaction from Michelle.

She praised Gus' authenticity to X, writing: “I was touched to see Gus Walz's joy when his father @Tim_Walz took the stage last night. I'm grateful you showed us all what true love looks like, Gus.”

She added: “Let's be a nation that embraces that kind of warmth and vulnerability rather than mocking it or ridiculing it. We could all learn a little from Gus' [examples] in our own lives.”

In his speech, Tim spoke about the difficulties he and Gwen went through on their journey to parenthood. The couple, both former teachers – Tim in social studies and Gwen in English – struggled with infertility for seven years before being blessed with their children.

“If you have never experienced the hell of infertility, I can guarantee you know someone who has,” Tim said in a voice full of compassion and understanding.

He described the “absolute agony” of those years and made it clear that his family’s story is one of perseverance and love.

The Walz family has always been open about their personal challenges, and in August, Tim and Gwen told People magazine about the difficulties they faced raising Gus, who was diagnosed with nonverbal learning disorder, ADHD and an anxiety disorder as a teenager.

“As our youngest, Gus, grew up, it became increasingly apparent that he was different from his classmates,” the couple said. “Gus preferred to play video games and spend more time alone.”

They continued: “When he became a teenager, we learned that in addition to anxiety and ADHD, Gus also has a nonverbal learning disorder, conditions that millions of Americans also suffer from.

“Like so many American families, it took us a while to figure out how we could do everything we could to give Gus a successful childhood.”

Tim and Gwen do not see Gus' condition as a “setback” but rather as his “secret power.”

They added: “It took some time, but we immediately realized that Gus' condition is not a setback – it is his secret strength.”

Regarding Gus's learning disability, the couple said Gus was “brilliant and attentive to details that many of us miss. But most of all, he was a great son and brother to his siblings.”
