Death while in custody at Pennington County Jail

A 44-year-old Rapid City man was found dead in his cell at the Pennington County Jail on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Pennington County Sheriff's Office, Robbie Rombough was found hanging by a correctional officer during a routine 30-minute round.

Rombough was taken into custody on July 21 after Rapid City police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of ​​5200 Pinedale Circle. Rombough was caught barricading himself in a nearby residence and the Rapid City/Pennington County Special Response Team was called to handle the situation.

Rombough was charged with first-degree burglary, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault and discharging a firearm into a building or motor vehicle. Rombough was also charged with simple assault and possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated.

Prison staff and paramedics attempted life-saving measures, officials said, but the inmate was later pronounced dead.

The Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the incident. The Meade County Sheriff's Office will handle the post-mortem examination.
