Woman injured in shooting during White Sox game sues team – NBC Chicago

A woman who suffered injuries in a “shooting incident” while attending a Chicago White Sox game at Guaranteed Rate Field in August 2023 has filed a lawsuit against the team, alleging that game security failed to prevent someone with a firearm from entering the stadium.

The lawsuit seeks more than $50,000 in damages for “personal injuries, financial losses and other damages – including past, present and future losses arising from the incident.”

The lawsuit alleges that a firearm was fired in the stadium during the game and that the White Sox did not adhere to the strict ban on firearms at Guaranteed Rate Field.

“The defendants had a duty to protect participants from foreseeable dangers, including firearms. Our client, an innocent participant, suffered, in our opinion, serious injuries because adequate safety measures were not taken,” said the victim's attorney, John J. Malm.

In a statement, John J. Malm & Associates said that a great deal of misinformation had been spread in the wake of the incident, with “speculation in the news media and social media” “unfairly and falsely” claiming that Jane Doe smuggled a firearm into the stadium and shot herself.

“Some of the media attention my client received in the days following her shooting, including statements on social media and radio broadcasts, was simply not true. Speculation and misinformation only added to our client's trauma. The facts of this case will demonstrate that our client, referred to in the complaint as 'Jane Doe,' is a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan who was the innocent victim of a shooting while sitting in the stands at Guaranteed Rate Field – while attending a baseball game with her family and friends,” Malm said in a statement.

The case is being heard in Cook County District Court. More details about the complaint can be found here.
