Viral video shows hikers fleeing volcanic eruption in Indonesia

Some hikers in Indonesia recently learned the importance of following the rules. The active volcano Mount Dukono erupted unexpectedly when they were on the mountain. A government drone reportedly captured the viral footage showing the hikers attempting to descend the mountain amid the eruption. In the video, a huge cloud of volcanic ash and debris can be seen rolling toward the hikers, who are desperately trying to escape.

According to Priatin Hadi Wijaya, head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Risk Reduction, the public is not legally allowed to venture closer than three kilometers to the crater of Mount Dukono. Wijaya also told news agencies that the government had advised against climbing or visiting the mountain due to the ongoing danger of volcanic activity.

Unfortunately, these hikers reached the summit despite the warnings. They landed in the middle of the Dukono eruption on August 17. Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries, which is nothing short of a miracle.

It is always controversial when governments restrict people's access to outdoor spaces. Should the public be allowed to take risks as they see fit? Or should the government protect people from themselves in such cases?
