Nvidia's new, slower RTX 4070 comes without a price cut, according to a leak

Nvidia will unveil a new version of its RTX 4070 that uses slower GDDR6 memory instead of GDDR6X. The first of these cards has been spotted and shows that despite having slightly slower memory, the new card will not be cheaper than existing models. The new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 V2 GDDR6 The MSRP of the cards is the same as other RTX 4070 cards at $549.

Since the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 is one of the best graphics card options in its price range, the fact that users could suddenly get a stripped-down version could significantly affect its appeal.

The new cards are two models from Gigabyte, which were revealed by tech news site Videocardz based on “our information.” The site shows a model called the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Windforce 2X V2 OC 12G GDDR6 with the model number GV-N4070WF2OCV2-12GD, and a second model that is not explicitly named but has the model number GV-N4070GAMING2OCV2-12GD. The first of these two cards is a dual-fan card, while the latter is a triple-fan card.

Looking at the Windforce card's packaging images (above) on the website, we can see that the labeling clearly indicates the V2 and GDDR6 aspects of the card in the model name, but there doesn't seem to be any explicit indication that it's not essentially a regular RTX 4070.

Additionally, Videocardz states that the list price for the new cards is $549, which is the same price as the existing entry-level RTX 4070 models. Given that these cards are expected to have memory that is a few percentage points slower than the existing RTX 4070 cards, it's a bitter pill to swallow that this difference isn't reflected at least a little bit in the price of the cards.

Still, this is apparently the first launch of these new cards we've seen so far, and it's still a leak rather than an official announcement, so other card makers might not only take a different approach, but also expect different final pricing from Nvidia.

As for when further announcements will be made about these cards, a release date is expected in September, so we should hear more very soon.
