Phoenix police release bodycam video of fatal shooting

Phoenix police have edited bodycam and surveillance videos from a fatal shooting involving a police officer that happened on August 10th.

According to our initial report on the incident, officers arrived near the intersection of 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street around 3:35 a.m. after callers to 911 reported that the suspect had a weapon, was firing shots, and was threatening multiple people.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Imani Jackson, exited the vehicle in a car before Phoenix police arrived, but was found a short time later near 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road. Investigators say officers were attempting to conduct a traffic stop when the suspect ran from the vehicle on foot. When officers saw the suspect allegedly reaching for his waistband, an officer fired at least one shot, striking Jackson. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

In an interview with the suspect’s familyWhile they acknowledged that the suspect had some difficulties in the past, they said he was turning his life around and was now devoting his time to work, AA meetings and caring for his grandchildren.

“He was the protector and provider of the family,” Hune'e Jones said during a candlelight vigil on the evening of August 11.
