COURT DOCUMENTS SHOW A DOCTOR HAS BEEN ASKED TWICE SINCE TO DETERMINE HIS MENTAL COMPETENCE. THE LAST TIME WAS IN JUNE OF THIS YEAR, BUT TODAY THE JUDGE ORDERED THE PROCEEDINGS TO CONTINUE.

Trial begins for man accused of killing Sacramento police officer Tara O'Sullivan

A Sacramento Superior Court judge on Friday resumed the criminal case against a man accused of killing a city police officer in 2019. Sacramento police officer Tara O'Sullivan was shot and killed on June 19, 2019, after officers were called to a home to help a woman escape domestic violence. Adel Ramos, a man with a history of domestic violence restraining orders, was arrested after the shooting and hours-long standoff. Court records show that since Ramos' arrest, a doctor has been asked twice to determine his competency to stand trial. The last time was in June 2024. After the judge ordered the criminal trial to continue, jury selection is scheduled to begin Sept. 11. O'Sullivan grew up in the East Bay community of Pleasant Hill. She graduated from the Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars program at Sacramento State in December 2017 and joined the city's police force the following month. A Sacramento Superior Court judge on Friday reopened the criminal case against a man accused of killing a city police officer in 2019.

Sacramento police officer Tara O'Sullivan was shot and killed on June 19, 2019, after officers were called to a home to help a woman escape a domestic dispute.

Adel Ramos, a man who had previous restraining orders for domestic violence, was arrested after the shooting and hours-long standoff.

According to court documents, since Ramos' arrest, a doctor has been interviewed twice to determine his fitness to stand trial. The last time was in June 2024.

After the judge ordered the criminal trial to continue, jury selection is scheduled to begin on September 11.

O'Sullivan grew up in the East Bay community of Pleasant Hill. She graduated from the Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars program at Sacramento State in December 2017 and joined the city's police force the following month.

The Tara O'Sullivan Memorial Bridge on H Street over the American River was named in her honor in 2022.
