Dallas doctor dies in accident on way to work – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Dr. Durdana Sikander treated veterans at the Dallas VA Medical Center with loyalty and a smile, says her friend and colleague Dr. Rabia Khan.

“She was an American citizen and said, 'I love helping our American veterans, they served us and now I want to help them in return,'” Dr. Khan recalled.

She says Dr. Sikander was on her way to work on Thursday morning, as she had done for years, when she was involved in a terrible accident.

According to Dallas police, 58-year-old Sikander was turning from W. Ledbetter onto Brook Spring Drive at around 7:50 a.m. when she was struck from the side by a truck and died at the scene of the accident.

Dallas police said the driver who struck them was still at the scene of the accident. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Today, a memorial stands at the site of the accident, just 10 minutes from the VA hospital.

“As a neurologist, I deal with head injuries, concussions and car accidents, but when something like this happens to one of you, it hits you hard, and that's what happened to you,” Dr. Khan said.

Dr Khan says Dr Sikander had a servant’s heart and also donated time and money to the charities.

The two, she says, had planned to travel together soon.

Instead, she attended Dr. Sikander's funeral at a Flower Mound mosque on Friday along with doctors, nurses and medical professionals, some of whom wondered how such a terrible thing could happen to such a good person.

“Sometimes we are not able to do that,” said Dr. Khan. “You just leave it to a higher power.”
