Suspect robbed murder victim, ran her over and then led a chase with police in KC

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – Court documents have revealed new information about a shooting at a Kansas City gas station that left one person dead.

A probable cause affidavit filed in Jackson County, Missouri District Court stated that Lorenzo C. Johnson, 31, of Kansas City, was seen on surveillance camera video committing the crime.

Surveillance footage showed that Michael Deehan, 33, arrived at the BP gas station at 3319 Linwood Blvd. shortly after 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, in his red Nissan Versa and then parked at the pump.

A gold Lincoln Town Car, which had been seen at the scene of several armed robberies that had occurred less than two hours earlier, also pulled into the parking lot. This car, too, was believed to have been occupied by Johnson during the robberies.

Cameras caught Johnson exiting the vehicle and beginning to struggle with Deehan before getting into the victim's car. Deehan could be seen attempting to punch Johnson before Johnson exited the vehicle again. This time, Deehan backed away as Johnson pointed a firearm at him and shot him in the head.

Before Johnson left the parking lot in Deehan's vehicle, footage also showed him backing over Deehan's body and speeding away. At around 10:55 p.m., the stolen vehicle was seen parked near the corner of 31st and Spruce Ave., about nine blocks from the crime scene.

Police officials said they attempted to make contact with the occupants, Johnson and a white woman, but he was seen pulling out a gun and attempting to point it at them before speeding away.

According to court documents, officers continued to pursue Johnson before he lost control of the vehicle and crashed near E. Linwood Blvd. and Jackson Ave. The woman jumped out and ran while Johnson again reached for his gun before a marked patrol vehicle pushed the Nissan so he could be safely arrested.

However, court records show that the same marked patrol vehicle was not properly placed in park and struck the Nissan again, causing the airbags to deploy. This allowed Johnson to regain control of the stolen vehicle and drive off the curb, then head north on East 31st Street. He led officers on a chase through the city before crashing the vehicle in a median on Van Brunt Blvd. near I-70, about a mile from where he was originally spotted.

Police officers said Johnson took off and fled while they continued to pursue him in their patrol cars. He was finally arrested shortly after 11 p.m.

As of Friday, Johnson remains behind bars, with no bail posted and no court date scheduled.
